After the highs of last year watching British athletes do so well in the Tour De France and the Olympic Games, it was hard to imagine we would be able to get any where near that again.
This weekend, though, Andy Murray has shown us all that it is possible to overcome traumatic experiences, focus on a goal and ultimately achieve that aim. Well done to the BBC for putting together an excellent documentary incorporating Andy Murray's life from the Dunblane tragedy to his Wimbledon victory. The sixty minute programme gave an interesting and seemingly genuine profile of a pretty normal person who has been extraordinarily well focused in his mission to win.
It has been good to see a number of athletes come to light over the last few years who have demonstrated the ability to push the boundaries of their abilities, often through difficulties, and remain focused as far as they can go. I they can keep their heads (when all around are losing theirs) they can, and often do, become positive role models for the next generation and for society in general.
It's not a walk in the park to achieve in this way, it often requires years of hard work and a determination to suceed in whatever your aims are.
We are emerging from the recession and this is the time for positive role models to demonstrate what can be achieved and for the rest of our society to pick up on some of these traits and apply them to our daily lives. We can, all be winners if we put our minds to it...
